Most people start with a 5 mukhi, and for most people it is the right first bead. By our count, about 99.9 per cent of the beads our trees give are 5 mukhi.
If you have a particular reason to look further, our guide to which Rudraksha is best for you starts from what you want a bead for rather than from a number, and the 5 mukhi Rudraksha guide covers the bead most people choose.
Rudraksha beads by mukhi
We sort every bead by face count first, then by diameter in millimetres, then by surface condition. The table gives the deity and planet tradition links with each of the beads people ask for most. Texts and teachers differ on some of them.
Rudraksha beads from 1 to 14 mukhi and Gauri Shankar, with the deity and planet each is traditionally linked with
These are traditional associations recorded in Vedic and Puranic sources. They are described here as tradition, not as medical or therapeutic claims, and no bead is a substitute for medical care.
How to check a Rudraksha bead is original
Three checks matter: the mukhi lines run unbroken from hole to hole, the chambers inside match the lines, and the surface has not been carved, glued or filled. Only an X-ray settles the chambers. Our guide on how to identify original Rudraksha sets out each check, and what a Rudraksha X-ray shows explains how to read one you are sent.
Nepali or Indonesian Rudraksha?
Both are real Rudraksha. Nepali beads grow at altitude and are larger, with deep lines; Indonesian beads grow in the lowlands and are smaller and cheaper, with fine, shallow lines. The only fraud is the label. Our comparison of Nepali and Indonesian Rudraksha shows how to tell them apart.

Questions buyers ask
Where do your Rudraksha beads come from?
From our own trees. Nepal Rudraksha Dana farms Rudraksha trees in the Arun Valley, Sankhuwasabha district, eastern Nepal. The trees grow at 600 to 1,400 metres above sea level. We collect the fruit and sort every bead ourselves, so no wholesaler stands between our trees and the bead you receive.
For most people, a 5 mukhi. It suits everyone, needs no birth chart and is the least counterfeited face count. Tradition links it to Kalagni Rudra, a form of Shiva, and later astrology to Jupiter. Choose another bead only when you have a specific reason, such as a 7 mukhi for a Saturn period or a 4 mukhi for study.
Check that the mukhi lines run unbroken from hole to hole, that the chambers inside match the lines, and that the surface has not been carved, glued or filled. Only an X-ray is conclusive about the chambers, and the water and copper-coin tests prove nothing. Ask any seller for an X-ray of the bead itself rather than a sample image.
What is the difference between Nepali and Indonesian Rudraksha?
Both are genuine seeds of Elaeocarpus trees. Nepali beads grow at altitude and are larger, with deep, clearly separated lines. Indonesian beads grow in the lowlands and are smaller, with fine, shallow lines and a much lower price. Neither is fake; selling one as the other is. An X-ray cannot tell them apart, so size and lines are what to look at.
