From the farm: almost every bead our trees give is a 5 mukhi. That abundance is why they are cheap, and it is also why we can afford to be strict. Every one we list is measured in millimetres first, so the size you are quoted is the size of the bead.

If you only ever own one Rudraksha, this is almost certainly the one. It is the bead the tradition treats as universal, and it is also the most honest place to start because it is too cheap to be worth faking.

What is a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha?

Five deep lines run from the top hole to the bottom hole of the bead. Each line marks the edge of a separate compartment inside the seed, so a genuine 5 Mukhi holds five chambers and five seeds. The lines and the chambers always match, which is why an X-ray is the only test that settles the count.

It is the face count a mature tree produces most of. That abundance is the whole reason it is inexpensive, and it is worth holding onto, because it explains most of what follows: the price, the low risk of fakes, and why it became the bead of the everyday mala.

What are the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha benefits in tradition?

The Shiva Purana and the Devi Bhagavata Purana both describe the five-faced bead as Rudra himself in the form called Kalagni. The Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad connects it with the five faces of Shiva. The link to Jupiter comes later, from astrological practice rather than from these texts, and it is where the associations with wisdom and teaching come from.

The panchmukhi Rudraksha benefits that follow are traditional beliefs recorded in those sources and in the practice built on them. They are not medical claims, and no bead is a substitute for medical care.

• A calmer, quieter mind — the association it is best known for, and the reason it is the standard bead for japa and meditation.
• Relief from mental agitation, which is why it is traditionally recommended to people under sustained pressure. We keep it on our calm and anxiety page for that reason.
• Clarity of thought and study, through its later link to Jupiter as the teacher.
• Speech and honest expression, through its link to the Vishuddha or throat chakra.
• General wellbeing and long life, which is the broadest and oldest claim made for it.

You will find sellers attaching blood-pressure and heart claims to this bead. Those are traditional associations being restated as medicine, and we will not do that. If you have a blood-pressure problem, treat it with a doctor and wear the bead for the reason the tradition actually gives.

Is a panchmukhi Rudraksha the same as a 5 mukhi?

Panch is five in Sanskrit, Hindi and Nepali, and mukhi is face. Panchmukhi rudraksha and 5 mukhi rudraksha are two names for one bead, not two grades or two origins. You will also see panch mukhi, five-faced, or simply the five-line bead.

The name matters only when you are comparing prices. A listing called panchmukhi is not rarer or more powerful than one called 5 mukhi, and a seller who charges more for the Sanskrit name is charging for the word.

Who traditionally wears a 5 mukhi?

Everyone, in the plain sense. The tradition places no restriction on it by gender, age, caste or religion, and unlike the higher counts it is not tied to fixing one specific planetary problem. There is no chart to check, no transit to time it to, and no combination it conflicts with. That is why it is given to beginners, to older children and to renunciates alike. Babies and toddlers are the exception: no strung bead is safe on them, for the reasons in the side-effects section below. What is the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha mantra?

The beej mantra traditionally given for the 5 mukhi, and the one listed for it in the Shiva Purana, is:

ॐ ह्रीं नमः — Om Hreem Namah (oṃ hrīṃ namaḥ)

It is usually said before the bead is worn for the first time, often 108 times on a Monday. Om Namah Shivaya is the common substitute, and many families use it for every bead regardless of face count. Mantra lists differ between traditions; Om Hreem Namah is the one our catalogue records for this bead. Neither mantra is a precondition for wearing it. The tradition treats the mantra as a way of beginning, not as a switch.

How much does a 5 mukhi Rudraksha cost?

Three things set the 5 mukhi Rudraksha price, in this order: the rarity of the face count, then the diameter, then the condition of the surface. The 5 mukhi is the commonest face, so rarity adds almost nothing and diameter does most of the work. Ours are priced on request while we confirm our price list. Every bead in every band is Nepali, from the Arun Valley, and measured, so a larger bead is not a more genuine one.

The top band is different in kind, not just in size. A 5 mukhi over 32 mm is among the rarest beads we handle, and 35 mm is the largest 5 mukhi we have found on our own trees or from the Arun Valley farmers we buy from. If someone offers you a 5 mukhi this large at an ordinary price, ask for its measured diameter and an X-ray before you believe it.

When we quote, we quote in US dollars; rupee figures on this site are dated conversions, not a separate Nepal price list. A 5 mukhi is the commonest face, so a genuine one should never be priced like a rare bead, and the panchmukhi Rudraksha price should be the same as the 5 mukhi price for a bead of the same size: it is the same bead. If a small bead from a trusted local shop is what you want, it will do the job the tradition describes, and you do not need ours.

How do you check a 5 mukhi Rudraksha is original?

Telling a 5 mukhi Rudraksha original from a fake is easier than for any other face. It is the most common bead, so it is rarely faked as a 5: carving lines takes time, and nobody spends that time on a bead that sells for a few dollars. The counterfeiting is concentrated on the 1 mukhi and the high counts. The risks that do apply to a 5 mukhi are these.

• An Indonesian bead sold at a Nepali price. This is the commonest fraud in the trade, because it needs no work, only a new label. Ask for the diameter in millimetres and look at the depth of the lines. Both are genuine Rudraksha; the differences are in Nepali vs Indonesian Rudraksha.
• A 5 mukhi carved to pass as a rarer face, such as a panchmukhi with extra lines cut to look like a 7 mukhi. A carved groove has no chamber beneath it, which is what a Rudraksha X-ray shows.
• A dyed or oiled bead. Dye, polish and oil change the surface of a genuine bead without making it fake. Colour on a damp white cloth means dye; a freshly oiled bead is darker and faintly tacky. What each treatment means is in chemically treated Rudraksha.
• A moulded resin bead sold in bulk to tourists, which you catch by looking for a repeating surface pattern across beads that should all differ.

A 5 mukhi with a line that is faint in places is not a fake. Grown lines vary in depth along their length. What matters is that each line runs unbroken from hole to hole, and that an X-ray, if you want one, shows five chambers to match. Are there any 5 mukhi Rudraksha side effects?

A 5 mukhi has no known medical side effects of its own. What can cause trouble is physical and has ordinary fixes: nickel in a cap or chain, the oil rubbed into the bead, dye in the thread, and the sharp ridges of a large Nepali bead pressing into the skin at night. Use plain thread or nickel-free fittings, oil it with something you already put on your skin, and wear it lower or take it off at night if it leaves marks.

Babies and toddlers should not wear a strung bead at all, because of the risk of strangulation and choking. Headaches, heat or vomiting are not the bead adjusting to you; anyone with them should see a doctor. Causes, fixes and the myths sellers repeat are in Rudraksha side effects.

Should you wear a single 5 mukhi, a bracelet or a mala?

A single bead is worn; a mala is used. One 5 mukhi on a cord at the throat is the whole of the traditional practice for most people, and any of our grades suits it. The largest are usually worn alone as a pendant, because they are noticeably heavier.

A 5 mukhi Rudraksha mala is a japa mala: 108 beads for counting mantra, with a larger sumeru or guru bead marking where a cycle ends so you never have to count. Most of the world’s 5 mukhi harvest goes into malas, which is why they are cheap per bead. If you are buying one, the thing to question is matching. Beads of the same diameter and similar colour across 108 pieces take a great deal of sorting. Ask what size the beads are and what the tolerance across the strand is.

A 5 mukhi Rudraksha bracelet is worn on the wrist rather than used for counting. A wrist cannot carry many large beads, so bracelets, like light malas, are usually strung from small Indonesian beads. Our smallest 5 mukhi grade starts at 18 mm, which is large for a bracelet. If a light bracelet is what you want, an Indonesian one from a seller who labels it as Indonesian is a good buy.

How do you wear a 5 mukhi?

Silk or cotton thread is traditional, and silver and gold caps are common; choose solid silver or gold, because nickel in base-metal fittings is the usual cause of a rash. Practical care matters more than ritual. Keep it out of chemical shampoos and chlorinated pools, oil it once or twice a year, and do not leave it baking on a windowsill.
