Mukhi means face, and a face is one of the natural lines that run down a Rudraksha from one end to the other. A 2 mukhi has two of them, and inside it has two chambers, one for each line. Do is two in Hindi and Nepali, so do mukhi, dwi mukhi and two-faced Rudraksha are all names for the same bead.

Both lines run the whole length of the bead, from one hole to the other, unbroken, and converge into the natural dimples at each end. Behind the two lines sit two chambers, which is what an X-ray of a genuine bead shows.

Nepali and Indonesian beads are both genuine Rudraksha, but they look different in the hand. Nepali beads are larger, with deep, wide lines that are easy to count by eye and a pronounced thorny surface. How to check a 2 mukhi Rudraksha is original

Telling a 2 mukhi Rudraksha original from a fake is simpler than for the rarer faces. The 2 mukhi is rarely faked; when it is, the usual method is a 3 Mukhi with one line sanded away, and the sanded area is usually slightly flatter than the rest of the surface.

1. Count the lines carefully. Two, running hole to hole, both continuous.
2. Check the ridge pattern across any suspect area. Removing a line takes the thorny texture with it, and sellers rarely restore it convincingly.
3. Look at the two ends. Both lines should converge into the natural dimples.
4. Count the chambers against the lines. An X-ray settles it: two chambers, not three.

2 mukhi or Gauri Shankar: which is which?

Both are relationship beads and they are constantly confused, including by sellers. They are physically different objects.

The practical difference for a buyer is fraud risk. A glued Gauri Shankar is one of the commoner counterfeits in the trade, and an X-ray settles whether the join is natural. A 2 mukhi is rarely faked; when it is, the usual method is the sanded 3 Mukhi described above.

How is a 2 mukhi Rudraksha traditionally worn?

Monday is the traditional day to begin, the Moon’s day, usually in the morning after energising the bead with its beej mantra. It is worn as a single bead at the throat or on the wrist, on silk, cotton or wool, or capped in silver.

Can a 2 mukhi be worn in a bracelet or mala?

We list the 2 mukhi as a single bead, and at 18–25 mm a Nepali one is a bead to wear on its own rather than in quantity: a wrist cannot carry many beads of that size. Malas and bracelets are usually strung from small, light Indonesian beads.

Side effects, and who should not wear it

A 2 mukhi has no known medical side effects of its own. What can cause trouble is what goes with it: nickel in a cap or chain, the oil rubbed into the bead, or dye in the thread. Babies and toddlers should not wear a strung bead at all, because of the risk of strangulation and choking, and anyone with a nickel allergy should use plain thread or nickel-free fittings.
