Ketu in the tradition

Ketu is the south node of the Moon, one of the two shadow planets. It is read as detachment, sudden events, past habits and the pull towards spiritual life — a planet people tend to want calmed rather than strengthened.

Two beads sit under it. The 9 Mukhi, given to Goddess Durga, is the one most often worn for Ketu. The Ganesh Rudraksha is a different thing altogether: a bead with a raised, trunk-like ridge on its surface, valued for its shape rather than its count of lines.

Each bead has its own beej mantra. 9 Mukhi: Om Hreem Hum Namah; Ganesh Rudraksha: Om Gam Ganapataye Namah. It is traditionally chanted when the bead is first worn.
