Who Shiva is

Rudraksha means “the eye of Rudra”, so in one sense every bead belongs to Shiva. The beads grouped here are the ones whose presiding deity is Shiva himself rather than one of his named forms.

They range from the Nirakar, a bead with no lines at all read as Shiva without form, through the 1 Mukhi — ours is the Nepali half-moon kind — to the very rare 24, 26 and 27 Mukhi, whose attributions vary between sources. The Savar, one line on a two-line bead, is here too.

Each bead has its own beej mantra. Nirakar (0 Mukhi): Om Namah Shivaya; 1 Mukhi: Om Hreem Namah; 24 Mukhi: Om Hreem Hum Namah; 26 Mukhi: Om Hreem Hum Namah; 27 Mukhi: Om Hreem Hum Namah; Savar / Sawar (1 Mukhi on 2 Mukhi): Om Hreem Namah. It is traditionally chanted when the bead is first worn.
