Which Rudraksha is best for you?

This question usually arrives after an hour of reading pages that each claim their bead is the one you need. Here is how we answer it when someone asks us directly, including the part where we tell people not to buy.

The short answer for most people

Buy a 5 Mukhi. Four reasons, in order of how much they should matter to you.

1. The tradition treats it as universal. It carries no astrological precondition, conflicts with nothing, and is the bead given to children and renunciates alike.
2. It is the least faked bead in the trade, because at $30 there is no margin in carving one.
3. It is cheap enough that being wrong costs you nothing.
4. It is what nine out of ten beads on the tree actually are, so you are buying the bead the tradition was built around rather than an exception to it.

Choosing by what you actually want

The associations below are traditional attributions recorded in Vedic and Puranic sources. They are not medical, psychological or financial advice, and no bead replaces treatment or a plan.

Do you need a birth chart?

Not for most beads, and we would rather say so than sell you a consultation. The 5 Mukhi in particular is described in the tradition as suitable for anyone, with no chart required.

A chart earns its place in exactly two situations. The first is when you want a bead for a specific planetary period — a dasha or a transit — because the whole point is to match the bead to a planet, and you cannot do that without knowing where the planets are for you. The second is when you are considering an expensive combination, where getting it wrong costs real money.

On "Rudraksha according to date of birth": what you can genuinely derive from a birth date alone is your sidereal Moon sign, which tells you about Saturn transits. Charts sold as personalised bead recommendations are frequently generated from a template, and the tell is that the recommendation is always an expensive bead.

How many beads, and combinations

One is a complete answer. The tradition supports single beads, and the idea that you need a set is largely a commercial development.

Combinations are traditional and real — the Siddha Mala assembles 1 through 14 Mukhi in sequence — but they are also where the money is, and they are recommended far more often than the tradition warrants. A sensible progression, if you want one:

1. A 5 Mukhi, worn for a few months. Anything you conclude about Rudraksha should be based on wearing one, not on reading about them.
2. Add one planetary bead for a specific situation — most often a 7 Mukhi, a 2 Mukhi or a 4 Mukhi.
3. Only then consider a combination, and only with a reading you did not buy from the person selling you the beads.

If a seller’s recommendation scales with your stated budget rather than with your stated problem, you are being sold to. It is the most reliable tell in this trade.

Size, origin and what is worth paying for

Once the face count is settled, two things drive price: where the bead grew and how big it is. Neither changes what the bead is traditionally for.

• Nepali beads run 14–40 mm with deep, clearly separated lines. Indonesian beads run 2–25 mm with finer lines and cost considerably less. Both are genuine Rudraksha.
• Size is the largest single price factor within a face count. A 30 mm bead can cost several times a 16 mm one of the same mukhi.
• For a single bead worn at the throat, 18–25 mm sits comfortably. For a bracelet or a 108-bead mala, smaller is better, and Indonesian beads are often the sensible choice.
• Surface condition affects price and not authenticity. A chip does not change the chamber count.

When we would tell you not to buy

• You want a bead to fix a medical problem. Wear one if you like, but treat the condition with a doctor. Nothing here is a therapy.
• You have been told you are cursed and need a specific expensive bead urgently. That is a script, and the urgency is the product.
• You are buying a 1 Mukhi because it is the most powerful. Read the 1 Mukhi guide first — most of what is sold under that name is not what it claims to be.
• You are about to spend serious money on a combination recommended by the person selling it, with no independent reading.
• The price is far below the going rate. That is not a bargain, it is a different bead.
