Mercury in the tradition

Mercury — Budh — rules speech, intellect, writing and trade. Students, writers and people who live by negotiation are the ones most often pointed towards a Mercury bead.

The 4 Mukhi, presided over by Brahma, is the long-standing choice and the only common bead here. The 15 and 19 Mukhi are higher-count beads whose planet is given differently from source to source; we list them under Mercury because our master sheet does, and say so on their pages.

Common questions

Which Rudraksha is worn for Mercury?

Traditionally 4 Mukhi, 15 Mukhi and 19 Mukhi. Which one suits you depends on your chart and on what you intend the bead for, so treat this as a starting point rather than a prescription.

Which mantra is chanted with these beads?

Each bead has its own beej mantra. 4 Mukhi: Om Hreem Namah; 15 Mukhi: Om Hreem Namah; 19 Mukhi: Om Hreem Hum Namah. It is traditionally chanted when the bead is first worn.

Do I need my birth chart before choosing?

Not necessarily. Many people choose by intention rather than by planet. If you do want the astrological route, an astrologer working from your own chart will give you a better answer than a category page can.

These are traditional associations recorded in Vedic and Puranic sources. They are described here as tradition, not as medical or therapeutic claims, and no bead is a substitute for medical care.
