our own trees

At present we ship live plants within Nepal and to India only. Within Nepal there is no border to cross. A plant going to India needs an import permit in your name first and a phytosanitary certificate from Nepal’s plant quarantine authority. We do not send plants anywhere else, though the beads go worldwide.

On our farm, a tree grown from seed first fruits in about four years, a young plant about three years after it is planted out, and a grafted sapling about two years after planting, because the graft is already mature wood. Other growers report up to seven years from seed; altitude, soil and care all change the timing.

How a Rudraksha tree grows

There is no fixed price list, because the plant is rarely most of the cost. Freight, inspection and, for India, the permit work decide the price, so we quote for the whole consignment once we know the grade, how many plants and where they are going. Tell us those three things on WhatsApp or by email and you will get one figure for all of it.

Yes, as a pot plant. Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) is a large evergreen tree, and our potted grade is grown on for a courtyard or veranda, where it stays a handsome evergreen but is very unlikely to fruit. For beads of your own it needs to go in the ground in a warm, frost-free garden.

It wants warm humid summers, a real wet season, well-drained soil and no frost. On our slopes that means 600 to 1,400 metres. Most of India and lowland Nepal suits it. In the frost-prone hills it still grows as a courtyard evergreen but will almost certainly never fruit. Tell us where it is going and we will say so before you order.

Nobody can tell you, and nobody can select for it. A single tree drops a whole distribution of face counts in one season, mostly 5 Mukhi, and you find out what you have after the fruit is off. A nursery offering a "1 Mukhi sapling" is not describing anything that exists.

Plants move at the start of the monsoon, roughly June to August, which is when a young tree can be lifted and re-established with the least check. Orders outside that window are held at the nursery until it opens rather than sent at the wrong time of year.
